Analysing horror movie taglines
Below is a list of taglines from horror film posters. I will be creating a number of potential taglines for my film that will feature on the poster and on the trailers that I create and I want to get a sense of anything specific to the taglines because they belong to the horror genre.
Haunted - Nowhere to escape. Nowhere to run.
Poltergeist - It knows what scares you.
Fright night - There are some very good reasons to be afraid of the dark.
The Forest - Do not leave the path
Burying The Ex - Some relationships just won't die
Rings - Evil is reborn
The Offering - The chosen will be sacrificed
A Nightmare on Elm Street - Welcome to your new nightmare
Hush - Silence can be killer
The Return - The past never dies. It kills.
The final destination - Rest in pieces
House of Wax - Prey. Slay. Display.
Let Me In - Innocence dies. Abby Doesn't.
Scream 4 - New decade. New rules.
The Ruins - Terror has evolved
Cabin Fever - Terror... in the flesh
Asphyxia - You can't hide from it
The Thing - Who can you trust?
Red Riding Hood - Believe the legend. Beware the wolf.
Smiley - Evil wears a smile
Session 9 - Fear is a place
Final Destination 5 - Death has never been closer
Having looked at these taglines I have noticed a number of similarities, often words or phrases are used in the tagline that immediately indicate the film belongs to the genre - words such as 'haunted', 'death', 'evil' and 'terror' hint at the violence and panic associated with the genre. The taglines also frequently use the pronoun 'you' to directly address the audience and therefore unsettle them. Often the tagline will imply that the film's events are based on a true story which makes the film seem even more terrifying. Often the tagline takes the form of an order/direct command or a warning; 'beware the wolf', 'Do not leave the path'.
