Teaser trailer conventions
Below are the teaser trailers for 'Back To The Future', 'Jaws', 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Avengers: Endgame':
Back to the Future -
Jaws -
The Dark Knight Rises -
Avengers: Endgame -
From looking at these four teaser trailers the main similarity appears to be the withholding of narrative information. In all of the teaser trailers very little of the plot of each film is revealed. Instead, the audience are teased with limited images from the film and are left to try and make sense of the information they are given.
Common conventions of teaser trailers are as follows:
- Relatively slow pace of editing
- Fades
- Reference to previous films (if part of a franchise)
- Dramatic music
- Limited dialogue
- A variety of camera shots (often tightly framed close-ups and shots that don't reveal too much to the audience.
- The title of the movie (usually towards the end of the teaser trailer)
- Taglines
- Production company logos at the beginning of the teaser trailer (certainly with more modern films)
- Names of stars/director
- Release date (usually vague rather than specific)
- Brief credits
- Website and social media links
