Genre Poster Analysis - conclusion

Here is a definitive list of the conventions of the horror genre that frequently appear in posters of films that belong to that genre:

  •  The majority of posters analysed usually incorporate a typical character type from within the horror genre in the central image of the poster - this is frequently a young child either haunted or being terrorised.
  • All posters analysed involve a very similar low-key, muted colour pallet, involving dark imagery adding additional layers of horror. Colours commonly used are dark greys, red and blacks depicting death and violence.
  • Some of the posters analysed display similar imagery all linking to the horror genre, varying from sinister shadows and haunted houses, to skeletons and shattered glass.
  • Hinting to negative implications, all titles on the posters analysed, connote to death and horror. For example 'Don't Breathe' and insidious'.
  • Relatively recent posters will commonly feature a link to the website or social media of the film.
  • Within the posters I analysed, almost all incorporated an unsettling and threatening tagline in order to lure in the audience.
  • Many of the posters analysed will often mention a horror film directed by the same director that has been a success in the past to entice audiences to want to watch this specific film.
