Horror film trailer analysis - Blair Witch
The first trailer I am analysing is TV spot for the 2016 horror movie Blair Witch.
There are a number of clear indications that this trailer belongs to the horror genre including:
- Sinister and unsettling impact sounds.
- Isolated setting - shots of a forest is typical of the horror genre.
- Loosely framed shots making the characters appear vulnerable.
- High angled shots again make the characters look vulnerable.
- Muted colour pallet is typical of the horror genre
- Low-key lighting creating a sinister and unsettling effect.
- Shots that show scared figure behaviour.
- A tag line that directly addresses the audience using the personal pronoun 'you'.
- Handheld camera work.
- Scenes of torture and violence.
- The title of the film makes an obvious reference to the horror genre through the word 'witch'.
- The serif font with sharp feet which is broken and eroded is typical of the fonts used in the horror genre.
- The 'R' certificate is typical of the rating for horror films.
- Sinister voice over at the end of the trailer.
