Horror film trailer analysis - Heretiks
The second trailer from the horror genre I am going to analyse is for Heretiks (2018).
The trailer contains many of the same conventions found previously and also one or two new conventions that are typical of the genre, including:
- Reference to a horror genre specific award/film festival 'Frightfest'.
- Sinister unsettling impact sounds.
- Low key lighting is used in several shots.
- Slow sinister non-dietetic music.
- Isolated setting - for example the woods, castle/church.
- high angled shots making characters look vulnerable.
- Shots that appear to be point of view shots as if characters are being watched.
- Hand held camera work.
- Numerous nighttime scenes.
- Religious iconography like the symbol of the cross.
- Enhanced sound effect.
- Scenes of violence, torture and blood.
- Editing using bright white flashes.
- Close ups of worried/anxious facial expressions.
- Images of the supernatural.
- Fast zooms.
- Props associated with the genre like a knife.
- The films title has connotations of horror. The font used is a serif, distorted, blood red, font.
- Tagline uses language associated with the genre such as 'sins', and also uses personal pronouns such as 'us' and 'our'.
